Dr. Viva Bartkus

Associate Professor of Management at the Mendoza College of Business, University of Notre Dame

Viva Bartkus is an Associate Professor of Management at the Mendoza College of Business, University of Notre Dame. Her research focus on the leadership approaches most effective in solving complex business problems and how social capital of communities enables collaboration.

As part of research to explore how CEOs make complex decisions, Bartkus interviewed over 100 CEOs of Fortune 500 companies on acquisitions, divestitures, new products launches, new market entry, and major organizational restructuring. Bartkus developed Business on the Frontlines, a Notre Dame MBA course that examines the impact of business in post-conflict societies. With this expertise in corporate decision-making as well as her experience in war-torn countries, Bartkus advises ND-GAIN on indicators of readiness to receive corporate investment.

As a Rhodes Scholar studying secessionist movements Bartkus traveled to Tibet, Burma/Myanmar, Bosnia, East Timor, South Sudan, Congo, and Baltic to conduct interviews. Prior to joining the faculty at Notre Dame, Bartkus was a partner at McKinsey & Company and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Catholic Relief Services and as Chair of the Board at Precision Time.
