Kenneth A. Hersh is a Co-Founder and the Chief Executive Officer of NGP Energy Capital Management, a premier investment franchise in the natural resources industry which has managed over $15.8 billion of cumulative committed capital since inception. Founded in 1988, NGP has invested more than $9.5 billion in over 280 transactions in energy and natural resources located throughout North America. Mr. Hersh is responsible for directing the strategic and investment activities of the firm. Under his leadership, NGP has been the catalyst for some of the larger recapitalizations and merger transactions in the sector. NGP has also been a leader in structuring and negotiating transactions with a total deal value of more than $51 billion. Under Mr. Hersh’s stewardship, the Natural Gas Partners funds have achieved a 27-year gross IRR of 30% (net IRR of 20%), making it one of the nation’s top investment firms.
Mr. Hersh currently serves in a senior managerial capacity for The Carlyle Group and as a director of Memorial Resources Development Corporation, Memorial Production Partners and numerous private companies. In addition, he serves on the Dean’s Council of the Harvard Kennedy School and on the Advisory Council of The Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. He is a frequent lecturer at industry functions covering topics relating to the energy, corporate finance and private equity sectors and has been a frequent contributor on CNBC and Fox.
Mr. Hersh is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and of the World Economic Forum where he has been a featured speaker at its annual meeting held in Davos, Switzerland. In 2014, Mr. Hersh was recognized as Master Entrepreneur of the Year for the Southwest Region by Ernst & Young as a part of its Entrepreneur of the Year program.
Mr. Hersh has also been very involved in the nonprofit arena both nationally and locally. In 2010, he founded the Global Adaptation Institute which today has become the Notre Dame Global Adaptation Initiative (ND-GAIN) where he serves as a member of its advisory board. The Institute is focused on helping the world adapt to population growth, economic development, urbanization and climate change. In addition, he serves on the board of the National Association for Urban Debate Leagues. Locally, Mr. Hersh serves on the boards of the Communities Foundation of Texas, Baylor Health Care System Foundation and the Dallas Wildcat Committee. He is also a member of the Dallas Citizens Council. From 1998 through 2015, Mr. Hersh served on the board of St. Mark’s School of Texas, his alma mater, where he held numerous positions including President from 2010 through 2012. In 2015, Mr. Hersh received the St. Mark’s School of Texas Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Prior to co-founding NGP, Mr. Hersh was employed by the investment banking division of Morgan Stanley & Co. where he was a member of the firm’s energy group specializing in oil and gas financing and merger and acquisition transactions. Mr. Hersh was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. After St. Mark’s, he attended Princeton University where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Politics in 1985. In 1989, Mr. Hersh earned his M.B.A. degree from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business where he graduated as an Arjay Miller Scholar.
Mr. Hersh and his wife, Julie, have two children and reside in Dallas, Texas.
